Charges for Animal Abuse to a Horse Farm Owner

In East  Aurora a horse farm owner Beth Lynne Hoskins  faces her 125th count of animal cruelty.  The SPCA seized 73 horses and 53 cats from her farm. The SPCA gave back 40 horses under the order of the State Supreme Court. 41 cats were signed away to new ownership. Of the remaining cats 1 dies. The other 33 horses are kept by the SPCA coasting the $825 a day.

What is animal abuse?

Animal abuse or animal cruelty is the deliberate abuse of an animal, or just simple failure to take care of and maintain animals and their surroundings. Some people may not know and understand that what they are doing is considered animal abuse, this would be unintentional. Examples of unintentional are simple as not paying attention to giving water, or having an unsafe shelter. However there is also forms of intentional abuse. It can go from a group of young kids throwing rocks at birds to burning animals. People intentional hurt animals due to psychological problems. They may get the feeling of power or because they enjoy hurting others. Most people with these problems aren't just taking it out on the animals but also may be on other people such as their own family. 

Legal Action on Animal Abuse

Over the years as animal abuse has grown, there has been changes to the laws and punishments of animal abuse. Each state has its own laws pertaining animal abuse. Here in New York tortures to an animal, and no water or food is a misdemeanor punishable with a $1,000 fine and up to 1 year in jail. Any unjustifiable purpose is known as aggravated cruelty,   and is punishable with a $5,000 fine and up to 5 years in jail. There is even a special police department that focuses specifically on animal abuse. Its called the ASPCA humane enforcement.   

Types of Animal Abuse

There are many different forms of animals abuse some simple and others very disturbing. Such as:
  • Puppy Mills
    • Dogs in unsafe living conditions being bred for profit
    • An estimated 4,000 puppy mills in the United States producing more than half a million puppies a year.
  • Dog Fighting
    •  Dogs are forced to fight for the entertainment of people
    • Creates revenue by admission, stud fees, and gambling
  • Circus
    • Animals are abused to learn the routines such as:
      • being burnt
      • poked with sharp objects
      • beaten 
      • whipped
    • Elephants are kept inn chains for as long as 23 hours a day from the time they were babies. 
  • Laboratory Experiments
    • Labs use animals to test out new products
  • Abandonment
    • Owners leaving behind or forgetting about there pets. Some people do this because they no longer want the pets, but will not take the time to find it a good home. Others simply just dont care about their pets. 
    • This includes:
      • No water or food 
      • No or limited shelter 
      • Tieing an animal to a tree or pole and leaving it 
      • No owner or person responsible to take care of it.
  • Slaughter Farms
    • Animals are being tortured before being killed
      • Shoved in to crowded dirty areas
      • Beating is used to control the animals
